Dear Diary,
Hattie Owen here. Finally the Summer. I just found out that Nana wants me to go to another super boring Summer Cotillion! Last years was horrible. I sat alone the whole time until Nancy O' Neil and Janet White (the mean girls) dared a guy to ask me to dance! Oh it was so horrible.  Nana thought that I had a great time. Well let me tell you about myself. I live with my mother, and father, and four boarders who live in our house. Their names are Ms. Hagerty, Mr. Penny, and Angel Valentine. Angel is a new boarder and she is so pretty. My Nana and Papa live in Millerton  with me. My best friend Betsy just left to go to Maine for the whole summer! I will sure miss her. I just found out there is a carnival coming to Millerton. I sure can't wait to go!

 Dear Diary,
Hattie again. Oh my goodness! So much has happened since I last wrote. I found out I have an uncle! Well another uncle. Not uncle Hayden who lives in California. Uncle Adam. He is much younger than my mother. Adam has mental problems. He went to a special school but it closed down. Adam is coming to stay with here! I'm pretty excited. Nana seems I don't know annoyed and kind of disappointed. Mom is seems pretty overwhelmed. I wonder what he will be like. I have never met someone before who is mentally challenged. Well I will have to find out soon. I i sure hope he is nice.

Dear Diary,
I am so very sorry that I haven't written in a long time. So much has happened. I will have to start from the beginning.  I will start with Adam. The first time I saw him was when I went over to Nana's and Papa's for dinner. Adam answered the door and was super friendly. Nana got mad at him a few times that evening but it was mostly a good time. After that Adam would come over to the house a lot. He seemed to like Angel a LOT. He stared at her chest mostly. She didn't seem to mind. Mom didn't want to talk about Adam to much. All our old boarders knew Adam. Angel and I are the only ones who didn't know him before. Adam really liked to quote I Love Lucy. Well when the Carnival finally came to town My mom, dad and I all went on the first night. It was so beautiful. All the rides lit up. I went everyday after that. I met a girl named Leila. Her whole family worked at the carnival! She was really nice. I got to eat some food for free. We started hanging out with each other. I introduced her to Adam and she wasn't judgmental at all. Leila seemed to like him. In the middle of the summer Adam and Leila through a mini birthday party for me. It was really nice. Adam even bought me a mini cake. I got to miss the Summer Cotillion for the party. A few days later Nana and Papa were having there annual summer party at night. No kids were allowed. Not even Adam, and he is 22! Well mom and dad said I could go to the carnival at night.  Adam wasn't allowed to go so I told him to sneak out. We both went to the carnival. Leila met us at the entrance. Everything was going great until until Adam said he wanted to go on the Ferris wheel. I was surprised because he usually never liked going on rides. We got on the ride and the worst thing possible happened. Right at the top the ride stopped. Adam totally freaked out! He started screaming and rocking back and forth. Then he got out of his seat and started trying to crawl down to the ground! He was screaming like crazy. Finally the ride got moving and when we got on the ground the police where there. So were my parents. Nana took Adam away but I was in so much trouble! I was grounded and Nana said I could never go back to the carnival! Well a few days later after that crazy stuff was over Adam come over. It was in the morning and he seemed fine. He had flowers and said they were for Angel. I took Adam up to Angel's room and knocked. When no one answered I went in. I saw Angel tumble out of bed with no shirt on. Next to her was a man! That was against the rules! No person of the same gender can be in your room at our boarding house! Adam just stared. Then he ran out. I didn't see at all the rest of the day. I went to Nana's to see if he was okay but she said she he left a while ago and never came back. When I told her she wasn't she told me to go straight home. I did mom and dad told me they still couldn't find Adam. The police had been called. That night mom and dad came home late. Mom's eyes were red and puffy. They told me the police had found Adam by the shed in Nana's backyard. He had hung himself earlier that day. I couldn't believe it. Adam? Happy lovely Adam? I was heartbroken. Well now a few months later things are better. Angel left and never came back. I still miss Adam and will never forget this summer.
